Naturalization is the process by which a person who is already a permanent resident obtains U.S. citizenship. Upon becoming a naturalized citizen, a person gains rights such as voting, petitioning for certain family members, and receiving a U.S. passport. It also involves meeting requirements such as residency time, good moral character, and passing an English and civics test.
